'Better Call Saul' - Review: "Bali Ha'i" (Spoilers)
On this week's Better Call Saul, Mike faces some goons and Jimmy sings a cheesy song for Kim. My thoughts are after the jump.
I feel as if this was a set-up episode for the rest of the season, but it is an episode that I found a little more engaging than the past two weeks. The reason for that is that instead of staying stationary in iffy situations, our characters are finally being presented with options to consider and situations to get out of. It felt like the show was actually moving forward this week instead of staying put and dealing with being stuck in a singular space.
We also had Jimmy and Kim get back together for some flirty con game shenanigans which is nice to see again. I also loved the scene with Kim starting to smile when she listens to Jimmy's song on the answering machine. Their chemistry and dynamic as a couple on the show is absolutely delightful. I love the idea of them being together. I was worried that the time of a happy Jimmy and Kim was over, but I was far from the truth. It seems as though they may be teaming up for the long haul. Instead of Kim chastising Jimmy for his behavior, it looks like she may join in on the fun. It would be incredibly fascinating if that was the direction the show stayed in and they are a sort of Bonnie and Clyde for the remainder of their time on the show together. Obviously whatever happens will not end well, but this could be a fun way to get there that could ultimately pack an even bigger emotional punch once it all falls apart. From the looks of the sneak peek for next week, Jimmy and Kim are going to plan something big together that will bring them closer to the birth of Saul. I wonder how involved in that birth Kim will be. I definitely like this trajectory for their relationship better than what I thought it would be.
Mike's part of this season has definitely been our big connection to our origin series Breaking Bad. Not only did Hector come back this week, but the twins were back as well! It was so cool to see this group of people together who would eventually be important as individuals on Breaking Bad. It would be great if we got a scene with this group along with Tuco later. Mike was put into a tough situation this week, but even he made the best of it. The scene in the house when he gets the upper hand agaisnt Hector's goons was a great sequence. On a show where tense sequences come a bit more sparingly, it is always a pleasure when the show dips its toes into the Breaking Bad pool. My best prediction moving forward is that Mike is not just going to take that money. It will not be enough. He knows that the gang knows where he lives and that he has a family that he loves deeply. I think Mike is going to lead some sort of offensive against the group to scare them off for good but also set him on the path that eventually leads to working for Gus, which I believe is the ultimate destination for Mike on Better Call Saul. What if Mike was responsible for Hector being in the wheelchair with the bell? That would be an awesome revelation. I can only imagine how fantastic that scene would be.
Even though this felt like a set-up episode, I found it very satisfying and gave a lot of material to think about and get excited for the future. Instead of wallowing in the situations that the characters kind of got themselves stuck in, we got a little hint of them using their smarts to break out of them and that is an exciting prospect.
